Bjork meet Omar Souleyman

Submitted by thisisworldtown on February 19, 2011 – 1:28 pmOne Comment

2_bjorkConfession: every time anyone mentioned Omar Suleiman - the guy Hosni Mubarak appointed as Vice-President of Egypt - in the last month, I couldn’t help but think of this guy Omar Souleyman. Souleyman is the forefather of what could be called Dabketronika, AKA the Syrian folk/pop-star turned hipster Godfather. He’s been making music since the 90’s, but his appeal reached Westward in recent years. Souleyman has nearly 500 albums to his name and tours widely in Europe and America since signing onto the American record label, Sublime Frequencies.  An upcoming collaboration with an equally obscure, but widely known subliminal creature Bjrok perhaps isn’t that unexpected.

Read more about what the collaboration might sound like at The Fader. And ponder the embrace of ethno-techno on the world music circuit.
