American Sweethearts With a Different Name

muslim-school-football-081110jpg-131aecdccde64d6e_largeWhat could be more American than football? I’m sure there are plenty of things, but no sport offers a more iconic symbol for American identity. So it’s timely that a documentary tracing a High School Football league in Dearborn, Michigan during Ramadan relishes in the good ol’ American football game.  But, what’s so special about this  team? Well, they happen to be 98% Muslim and a majority are of Arab-American descent. It’s a refreshing picture amidst clashing images of “Muslims” who can’t be “American” in news stories and public opinion polls from around the world in recent months (or is it years, who can keep track anymore?). In a high school like Fordson, all it takes is the game of football to show how you can concurrently be Muslim and take home the State championship - no apologies about it.
