Retrospective: ‘Streets’ Change Shape

Submitted by thisisworldtown on July 17, 2010 – 6:08 pmNo Comment

savThe Chicago-based Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN)’s urban festival of music, faith and social justice took place on June 19th to an audience as diverse as the cultures represented onstage at Marquette Park. The festival, Takin’ in To The Streets, started as an outreach component out of IMAN’s principles of social change and faith bringing together a 100 performers from around the globe - from Arab Rappers to urban Muslim breakdancers to a band of Tuareg musicians from the southern Sahara. Throw in some kebab stands, a “Salaam Film-Festival”, and a general feel-good vibe and you have all the mixings of a perfect summer festival in the park. Takin’ it To The Streets, a self-proclaimed “urban international festival” is is one of the largest events of it’s kind. No wonder it’s being touted as the “Muslim Woodstock”, breaking musical boundaries and crossing cultural and religious barriers. Watch a slideshow featuring some of the highlights from the day.
