We will regularly be presenting a featured artist, writer or performer who is exploring questions of identity and personal narrative through their medium of expression.

The map is your representation. No rigid lines, no defined routes. You direct it on your own account.

Project: Soundright

Artist’s Description:

SoundRight started in early 2008 in response to the lack of Muslim women engaging in the performing arts. All of us volunteer at the an organization based out of the southside of Chicago called the Inner-city Muslim Action Network (IMAN). The Arts & Culture Director at IMAN was really the first person to encourage us all to come together and create music. Considering that none of us had any formal training in music, we were really starting from scratch. We wanted to show others how amateurs, like us, can use the resources we already have to empower ourselves and our community in a healthy and organic way. That being said, in our first show we performed a set with household instruments–as organic as it gets. This performance took place at IMAN’s bi-monthly Community Cafe entitled: “Mother of the Movement”.

Now, two years later, the women of SoundRight performances incorporate a diverse array of instruments from around the world. Each one of us really believes in creating a welcoming space where we can all enjoy ourselves.
