East London Dance Company’s recent production, Local/International, took the precarious role of shaping for Londoner’s the state of dance in this country. That is, in the world. It brought the story of “internationalism” - the less trendy forefarther to globalization - to a city that is the epicentre for such processes. And this story is dictated by an all female cast of choreographers (some well known, others just breaking the ice) inside the city that’s seen it all, either welcomed it, contained it, or passively ignored it.
I have been fairly lucky travel wise. I have two passports, both from countries that are generally welcomed around the world. I do of course get hassle from border guards sometimes because of my race (I’m South Asian). But my English, and the accent I speak it in, generally mean I can talk my way through basic questioning with some confidence, though not always ease.
Sorius Samura has directed a new documentary for channel four called Living With Illegals. It documents his experience living among illegal immigrants from Africa as they cross from Morocco into Europe for month, under dangerous and gruelling circumstance, for a chance at life in the West. By documenting this for a reality tv audience, he attempts to displace the vision of the voyeur by placating his own self - i.e. the viewer - into the lives of those he chooses to document - ironically those without any documents.
