Worldtown Via Londontown :: Happenings
I don’t get to do a lot of theatre in London. And I’m probably offending several theatre buffs, but I’ve never really been drawn to ’could be any where’ big production musicals and don’t quite see myself frequenting one of the West End halls anytime soon. But what I hear, is that I’m missing out on some fantastic smaller productions in the fringe of London’s theatre scene. Currently, a few productions deal with themes of identity, race, integration and immigration - all very Worldtown friendly topics. Here’s a few that I hope to check out:
- Rich Mix is featuring a production of Ice&Fire’s The Illegals, a community produced play that tells the story of the individuals behind the stereotype of illegal immigration. Ice&Fire focuses on “human rights stories through performance” and have put out a number of immigrant centred stories and plays in the past. The Illegals plays on November 19th at the Rich Mix centre.
- Mixed Up North is based on a true story of a drama group in racially divided Burnley called ’Breaking Down Barriers in Burnley’ trying to find creative ways to mend tensions in their community. Sexual desire, mixed race coupling, and neighbourhood clashes paint the picture along the way. Apparently there’s a Bollywood number at the end of the show to watch out for… hopefully it’s not too cringeworthy. The Play is on until the 5th of December at Wilton’s Music Hall.
