Worldtown Hearsay :: Chasing the ghosts of East Berlin
Twenty years on, the celebrations commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall are in full swing. It seems everyone who was old enough to remember the crumbling wall has some poignant memory associated with the event. Here’s a pick of some memorable commemorative stories surrounding the anniversary:
- German born illustrator Christopher Niemann has created an “Abstract City” story book for the New York Times blog using orange and black paper to visualize his associations of the Berlin wall.
- Demotix features photographs of the styrofoam Domino Wall painted by schoolchildren to be symbolically toppled in commemoration of the fall of the Wall.
- This blogger from Berlin took photographs of the artwork on the Wall fully restored by the artists who originally painted them on the actual wall before 1989.
- A BBC Special Report on walls and barriers that still exist around the world restricting populations who must put up with them.
- NPR’s Talk of the Nation features an Eyewitness audio programme with men and women who experienced the fall of the Berlin Wall first-hand.
- A personal favourite, Alvin & the Chipmunks perform the catchy “Let the Wall Come Down” in a special episode on the fall of the Berlin Wall. Sadly, only poor quality YouTube versions of this song and episode exist.
