Hearsay:: what to watch since we’ve been missed

Submitted by thisisworldtown on August 21, 2009 – 12:33 pmNo Comment

This is Worldtown has been on a short hiatus due to its people taking too much time bouncing around the globe and too little time producing tales for the site.   In any case, we apologize for this interruption and present you with a short list of websites with similar mandates that you should check out ASAP.  Without, of course, sacrificing any loyalty to yours truly.

The Emergence Travel Agency  is an ingenious  project by Detroit based MC Invincible. A travel agency focused on creating media that “resists displacement, gentrification, colonization, obstruction of movement, denial of the right to leave, and denial of the right to return.”  Most notably, Invincible’s latest project, a docu-music video called People Not Places takes a tongue and cheek look at the recruiting methods of another type of travel and tour operator - Birthright Israel - pointing to the blatant neglect of Palestinian narrative and symbols in the Birthright images and recruitment materials.

Emergence Travel Agency’s other projects in collaboration with other artists such as DAM are also available on the website, lending to the strong messaging connecting displacement, colonization and cultural resistance for Palestinians and others all around the world.

TWO: NoCommercialValue is an online, curated art gallery showcasing work from artists all over the world on a weekly basis.  I came across this website a few weeks ago and appreciated not only the cute title, but the artistic content mixing music, service, and  personal narratives in a twist on public, participatory art.
