Being in India and sometimes existing under relatively harsh conditions has made me appreciate the silliest things. Here is an ongoing list of small pleasures to embrace whenever they make themselves present in India, in list form:

- An unexpected peanut butter and jelly sandwich on WHITE bread
- Lying under a fan when sweaty
- Eating freshly picked mangoes on the hottest, dustiest days
- Air conditioning
- Espresso coffee
- Cold showers
- Jumping into a clear river fully clothed after a sweaty hike through the mountains
- a real bed after three days on Indian buses
- cold mineral water
- five minutes without horn honking
- dogs with collars (petting without fear of rabies!)
- beer
- western style toilets
- toilet paper in public
- shower heads

Amy Gajaria has just completed her first year of medical school at the University of Ottawa. She’s set off on a two month journey across Asia, spending one month of that doing a medical elective in traditional medicine in the north of India. Amy has yet to see a deadly animal in India, but will keep her eyes peeled in anticipation.
